So after the popular tryst with Nail Polishes, the team at Nykaa.com has come up with lipsticks. One fine day while just browsing through Nykaa to check up on new launches, I saw these lipsticks at instantly ordered 3 of them. Affordably priced at Rs 399 for a whopping 4.2 g, here are some of my thoughts after using these lipsticks for a few days.
I had ordered 3 shades from the Nykaa So Matte Lipstick Collection namely 01 NotoriousRed, 08 Orange Vice and 10 Mischievous Plum. The collection consists of 10 shades at the moment and apaart from being available as singles, these lipsticks are also available in bundles which are definitely more economical. The range wonderfully covers a wide array of shades, however, what I missed seeing was a neutral earthy brown and especially since Brown are such a fad these days, I was a little disappointed.
The lipsticks came in a lovely colorful outer pack with shade names and color indicating stickers. However, the actual bullet did not have any color markings. The casing is a matte square and the cap has a magnetic closure. I mean, really!! Can you guys believe it. A budget lipstick with a magnetic closing cap? That definitely impressed me a bit. I only wish there was some sort of color indicator of the actual cases.
Talking about the shades, 01 Notorious Red is a beautiful neutral red. In the pictures it may look a bit warm but that’s because of the lighting that was really bad on the day that I had taken the pictures. 08 Orange Vice is a very warm peachy orange kind of shade. Going by the swatches on Nykaa’s Instagram account, I expected it to be more reddish-orange kinds, but alas!! The shade 10 Mischievous Plum is a cool toned shade that oscillates somewhere between a grape and plum. It’s definitely not a proper plum but I ain’t complaining!
Texture & Pigmentation:
All the shades have a smooth, creamy texture. These were fairly easy to apply with the super pointy bullet tip. These are also mildly scented. While Notorious Red and Orange Vice felt a little low on pigmentation, Mischievous Plum was loaded with pigments. Like while I was trying them on, I had to build up the colours in layers for Red and Orange, but in case of the Plum one, it was like bam! and my lips were loaded with color.
Okay, now this is the part that really put me down. The brand claims a soft matte finish on these, however, what I experienced was a creamy finish on application that only settled into a satin finish a few minutes post application. It stayed like that until the end of its wear time. The lipsticks also transfer a lot owing to their finish. However, they do not feather or bleed.
Notorious Red stays for about 4-5 hours, and leaves a reddish tint behind. Orange Vice stays a lot less, like about 2-3 hours and does leave a stain but it is not as stark. Mischievous Plum stays on longer than the other two, like about 6 hours and leaves behind a strong plum-berry stain.
Overall, I just have some mixed feeling about the Nykaa So Matte range of lipsticks. I like the shades Notorious Red and Mischievous Plum. They are quite pigmented, the color is buildable, that is in case you have the patience for it. Orange Vice failed me, and I regret picking it up. I have a feeling that the darker shades would perform better than the lighter ones in the range. Also, since it is only available online, that can be an issue for some. However, the packaging is nice and in case you aren’t hell bent upon the “matte finish” tag, you really can make these work for you. Also, a limited colour palette in the range was a bummer for me!
Would I recommend?
Maybe only the dark shades. Mischievous Plum is Gorgeous and I guess the Wine would would be great too. Do check that out!
